Spousal Sponsorship in Canada: What to Expect

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner for permanent residence. The application looks simple on paper, but small mistakes can cause months of delay.

Here’s what to expect from a spousal sponsorship application and how to give yours the best chance of approval.

Who can sponsor

  • Canadian citizens or permanent residents aged 18 or older
  • Sponsors must not be in default on a previous sponsorship undertaking
  • Sponsors must not be receiving social assistance (except for disability)
  • Sponsors must agree to support the spouse financially for three years

Inland vs. outland applications

Inland applications are filed when the spouse is already in Canada and may include an open work permit. Outland applications are processed through a visa office and often move faster, but the spouse may need to remain outside Canada during processing depending on their status.

Proving a genuine relationship

IRCC must be satisfied the relationship is genuine and not entered into primarily for immigration. Strong applications typically include:

  • Marriage or common-law documentation
  • Joint financial records (accounts, leases, bills)
  • Photos together over time and with family
  • Travel history and communication records
  • Statements from people who know the couple

Common pitfalls

Missing forms, inconsistent dates, weak relationship evidence, and failure to disclose prior relationships or dependent children are leading causes of refusal. Take time with the documentation — a thorough first submission almost always beats a rushed one.
